Week #3 of Sonori-kaะ and it’s time for an indie-band: Slow Reverse. They are U-Krist Sirichana (Uze), Pim-Uma Sirayanyong (Chompoo), Srivara Arayawongkul (Oil) and Kasawan Kungvalpivat (Pang). Their self-titled first album has been released in 2009, and it’s a full immersion into beautiful melodic dreamy synth-pop that has nothing to envy to their U.S. or European counterparts. They told us about how they got together, what they like, their inspirations, their projects and their new upcoming album Illumination.
 

 
Slow Reverse // U-Krist: “As a kid I always dreamt about becoming a music artist and finally in 2006 I decided with a friend to start a band. We worked together for a while experimenting different genres until we reached our identity as electronic synth-pop band.  It was then that we decided that we needed a female singer … and I have sister, Oil! She was the first to join the band and then Chompoo soon after her.

We recorded our first album, Slow Reverse, in my house, actually in my bedroom!! We finished around November 2008 and then we realised we were still missing the cover. So I contacted my friend Max and I asked him to design the packaging. We wanted him to come up with something “expensive” … and he did it!! We really wanted the album to impact the listener in every sense, to have a weight, something that you can touch and feel in your hands. At the same time we knew that the cost would have been high and that’s one of the reasons why we decided not to join the other labels, because it was like putting the burden on the label. So we founded our own label, colorcode.

Soon after the album was published we started receiving a lot of requests of live performances. At that time Pang had already plaid with us during an art exhibition in Pattaiya and we knew that we needed two female singers to make this work, so we asked her to join the group permanently.”

Slow Reverse: “We take inspiration from very different genre, from electronic to rock and folk acoustic music. We really like what is going on in countries like Indonesia or Philippines because they have a quite strong independent scene. Here in Thailand is a bit more difficult, but the scene is expanding and also the fans of this genre of music are growing. Is not easy to find the right way to reach a broader audience, because people are still very into mainstream and traditional Thai music, but we try our best to stick to what we like to do and to maintain our identity as an electronic band.”

Sonori-kaะ: Illumination, your second album, is about to be released very soon. Can you tell us more about this project?

Slow Reverse: “We were talking about doing something like this even before the release of the first album, we just didn’t realised that it would have taken so much to put together all the material. Illumination contains a CD with the remixes of our songs from the first album plus a DVD with all the video. Around 20 artists collaborated with us during the past two years on this. Most of them are our friends and had previously worked with the Bangkok based independent label Small Room. They did a great work!! We hope to launch it very soon.”

ในสัปดาห์ที่ 3 ของ Sonori-kaะ นี้ เราจะพาพวกคุณมารู้จักกับศิลปินอินดี้: Slow Reverse พวกเขาคือ อุกฤษฏ์ ศิริชนะ (อุซ),พิมพ์อุมา ศิระยรรยง (ชมพู), ศรีวรา อารยวงษ์กุล(ออย) และ กษวรรณ กังวาลภิวัฒน์(แพง) อัลบั้มแรกของ Slow Reverse วางแผงในปี พ.ศ 2552 เป็นอัลบั้มที่เต็มไปด้วยท่วงทำนองที่น่าหลงใหลเหมือนอยู่ในความฝัน และแนวเพลง ซินท์-ป๊อป ที่ไม่เหมือนกับวงอื่นๆ
วันนี้ Slow Reverse ได้มาเล่าเรื่องราวของพวกเค้าให้เราฟังถึงต้นกำเนิด แรงบันดาลใจ และโปรเจ็คล่าสุดที่กำลังจะเป็นอัลบั้มใหม่ของพวกเค้า Illumination

Slow Reverse// อุซ: “ตอนเด็กๆผมฝันว่าอยากจะเป็นนักดนตรี และในปี พ.ศ 2549 ผมก็ตัดสินใจตั้งวงกับเพื่อน เราก็มารวมหัวกัน ทดลองแนวเพลงต่างๆจนได้มาเป็น แนวอิเล็คทรอนิค ซินท์-ป๊อป และตอนนั้นก็เกิดไอเดียขึ้นมาว่าถ้าจะให้มันเหมาะจริงๆ พวกเราต้องใช้นักร้องที่เป็นผู้หญิง เราก็คิดว่า..เออ เรามีน้องสาวอยู่นี่ ออยก็เลยเข้ามาเป็นสมาชิกในวงก่อน ตามมาด้วยชมพูทีหลัง
เราอัดเสียงอัลบั้มแรกของพวกเราที่บ้านของผมเอง ซึ่งที่จริงแล้วคือในห้องนอน ทำอัลบั้มเสร็จประมาณเดือน พฤศจิกายน 2551 แต่ตอนนั้นยังไม่มีปกอัลบั้ม ผมก็เลยติดต่อ แม็ก เพื่อนของผม และขอให้เค้าช่วยออกแบบปกให้ พวกเราอยากได้แพคเกจที่ดูมีคุณค่า มีราคา อยากให้อัลบั้มมีอิทธิพลกับผู้ฟังในทุกๆด้าน ให้แพคเกจมันมีน้ำหนัก และสามารถสัมผัสรู้สึกได้ในมือ ซึ่งแน่นอนว่าต้องลงทุนด้วยราคาสูงมาก และนี่ก็เป็นเหตุผลนึงที่เราตัดสินใจไม่เข้าสังกัดกับค่ายไหน เพราะมันจะเหมือนกับการเอาภาระค่าใช้จ่ายไปให้เค้า พวกเราเลยตั้งสังกัดขึ้นมาเอง ชื่อว่า Colorcode”

“หลังจากที่อัลบั้มวางแผงได้สักพัก ก็มีคนติดต่อเข้ามาเรื่องการแสดงสด ช่วงนั้นแพงเคยมาเล่นสดกับพวกเราแล้วครั้งหนึ่งที่พัทยา เราจึงได้แพงมาเป็นสมาชิกของ Slow Reverse อย่างเป็นทางการอีกคน เพราะการแสดงสดต้องใช้นักร้องหญิงสองคน”

Slow Reverse: “เราได้รับแรงบันดาลใจมาจากแนวเพลงหลากหลายมาก จาก อิเล็คทรอนิค, ร็อค หรือแม้กระทั่งแนว โฟลค์ อคูสติก พวกเราชอบวงการดนตรีอินดี้ที่เกิดขึ้นในประเทศอย่างอินโดนีเซียหรือฟิลิปปินส์ เพราะวงการอินดี้มันใหญ่มากที่นั่น ต่างกับในประเทศไทย แม้ในตอนนี้วงการอินดี้ของเราก็กำลังเติบโตและมีคนฟังมากขึ้น แต่มันก็ยังยากที่จะเข้าถึงคนฟังใหม่ๆอยู่ เพราะว่าพวกเค้ายังอินอยู่กับเพลงตลาดทั่วไป และเราเองก็ยังอยากจะทำเพลงแบบที่เราชอบ และรักษาความเป็นอิสระนี้อยู่”

Sonori-kaะ: “Illumination อัลบั้มใหม่ที่กำลังจะออกเร็วๆนี้ แนวเพลงเป็นอย่างไรบ้าง ช่วยเล่าให้ฟังหน่อยได้ไหมคะ?”

Slow Reverse: “พวกเราเคยคุยกันเรื่องโปรเจ็คนี้ไว้ตั้งแต่ก่อนที่อัลบั้มแรกจะวางแผงด้วยซ้ำ แต่เราไม่คิดเลยว่ามันจะใช้เวลามากขนาดนี้กว่าที่จะเอาทุกอย่างมารวมกันได้ อัลบั้ม Illumination จะมี CD ที่เป็น remix ของทุกเพลงจากอัลบั้มแรกและ DVD รวมวิดีโอทุกอันของพวกเรา ตลอดระยะเวลาทำงาน 2 ปีนี้ เรามีผู้ร่วมงานทั้งศิลปินและผู้กำกับมากกว่า 20 คน ซึ่งศิลปินส่วนใหญ่ก็จะเป็นเพื่อนๆของพวกเราเอง รวมทั้งเพื่อนๆที่เคยทำงานกับสังกัด Smallroom มาก่อนด้วย มันเป็นประสบการณ์ที่สนุกมาก และเราหวังว่าอัลบั้มจะวางแผงได้เร็วๆนี้”
