This week Sonori-kaะ will take you into the world of dj/pop artist Logan Bay, a world made of art magazines, 4000 vinyl records and pop art. We met Logan for the first time over an ice-cream at the Bangkok Art and Cultural Centre and then again last week at Shades of Retro where he played for a special weird wave rock night that we hope will be repeated very soon!!!

Here is what he told us!!

Logan Bay: “I have been a dj for over 15 years now. There was a point when I was such a nerd all I had was vinyl records. I think I had something like 4000 records. I didn’t have anything digital. Everything I had, I had to own it as a record to play it. 

I am in the generation before Napster. I grew up in the mid-west and I moved to Chicago around 2000. My house in Chicago was next to Maxwell flea market. There was this guy named Sam who always had records for 1 or 2 dollars a piece, so every Sunday, no matter if I worked the night before, I would get up early, go get my coffee and just buy like 10 or 20 records and then just come home and listen to records. I just listened and listened. It was like a free education.”

Logan Bay: “I moved to Bangkok two years ago and I new I had to start from zero again. I had a residency in Chicago and you learn a lot by working in the same place because you start understanding what people like. But I am not here to tell people what they should know. I want to slip in things people should be interested in, because the very core of being a dj is working with your crowd and having that kind of dialogue. The crowd is what really makes an event.

In Bangkok I started with some private parties and then with some gigs here and there. Now I have three regular nights: Wednesdays at Ambar, Fridays at Hide&Seek and Saturdays at Mellow. I normally play old school Soul and R&B and I like to remix so I easily go through 30 or 40 songs an hour. But I  am not locked into one genre. I have always liked all kind of music and that’s why I became a dj. I was always kind of finding music and being into music. So for me the more weirder and the more connections you make with the musics the more fun it is.”

Sonori-kaะ: Logan, can you tell us more about your other art projects?

Logan Bay: “I like to be busy into things. Back in the States I worked 3-4 jobs simultaneously: I run a indiezene publishing store and I worked as dj, graphic designer and pop artist. Here in Bangkok I worked together with P7 on a show that I did one year ago with a grant from New York where we took over a factory and we turned it into a gallery. Then again this year together with other 15 artists for the FOR2 exhibition at the BACC that P7 curated and organized.”

Logan Bay: “With my wife we decided to create this free magazine called Subp A Roth (pineapple). We launched the first issue in July at the same time in Bangkok at Happy Monday and in Chicago at the Poetry Foundation. We intentionally left all the information in first issue to minimal because we wanted it to be still a very tactile, mysterious and romantic object. I feel like there’s a lot going on in the region that doesn’t qualify as fine art or does, but is like in between fine arts and graphic design and there’s always stuff that happens and that doesn’t get represented. So the whole idea of Subp A Roth is really to make people excited about arts.”

เราเจอโลแกนครั้งแรกในร้านไอศครีมที่ หอคิลปะวัฒนธรรมแห่งกรุงเทพมหานคร (BACC) และอีกครั้งที่ Shades of Retro ในคืนของ Weird Wave Rock Night ที่เราหวังว่าจะได้จัดขึ้นอีกเร็วๆนี้

โลแกน เบย์: “ผมเป็นดีเจมามากกว่า 15 ปีแล้ว เคยมีอยู่ช่วงนึงที่ผม nerd มาก ทั้งตัวมีแต่แผ่นเสียง คิดว่าน่าจะมีประมาณ 4000 แผ่น ผมไม่มีอะไรที่เป็นดิจิตอลเลย
ผมอยู่ในยุคก่อนที่จะมีเว็ป Napster ผมใช้ชีวิตวัยเด็กและโตในมิดเวสต์ และย้ายไปที่ชิคาโก้ในปี 2000 บ้านของผมที่ชิคาโก้อยู่ติดกับตลาดขายของมือสอง มีร้านของคนนึง ชื่อ แซม เค้าจะขาย
แผ่นเสียง แผ่นละ 1-2 ดอลล่าร์ ผมจะไปที่นั่นทุกวันอาทิตย์ ไม่ว่าคืนก่อนหน้านั้นผมจะทำงานดึกแค่ไหน ทุกเช้าวันอาทิตย์ผมจะต้องตื่นเช้า ดื่มกาแฟ และไปซื้อแผ่นเสียงทีละ 10-20 แผ่น เอามันกลับมาบ้านแล้วนั่งฟังไปเรื่อยๆ เหมือนการศึกษาเพลงโดยแทบที่จะไม่ต้องจ่ายตังค์เลย

ผมย้ายมากรุงเทพเมื่อสองปีที่แล้ว ผมรู้ว่าผมต้องเริ่มใหม่จากศูนย์อีกครั้ง ผมมีที่พักที่ชิคาโก้ คุณจะเรียนรู้อะไรได้มากเวลาทำงานอยู่ที่เดิม เพราะคุณเริ่มรู้ว่าคนที่อยู่แถวนั้นชอบอะไร แต่ผมก็ไม่ได้มาที่นี่เพื่อบอกผู้คนชอบอะไรไม่ชอบอะไร ผมอยากที่จะสอดแทรกอะไรบางอย่างที่จะทำให้คนสนใจ เพราะว่าแก่นแท้ของการเป็นดีเจ คือ เล่นกับคนฟังและสนทนากับเค้าผ่านจังหวะและเสียงเพลง เพราะสุดท้ายก็คือคนดูนั่นแหละที่ทำให้ event มันเกิด

ที่กรุงเทพ ผมเริ่มจาก งาน private party และคอนเสริต์เล็กๆ ทั่วไป ตอนนี้ผมมีงานประจำ 3 ที่ คือ คืนวันพุธที่ Ambar, คืนวันศุกร์ที่ Hide&Seek และคืนวันเสาร์ที่ Mellows ปกติแล้วผมจะเล่นเพลง Old School แบบ Soulและ R&B ผมชอบ remix ไปเรื่อยๆ ก็ประมาณ 30-40 เพลงต่อหนึ่งชั่วโมง แต่ผมจะไม่ล๊อกตัวเองกับดนตรีแค่แนวเดียว ผมชอบดนตรีหลากหลายแนวมาตลอด ผมถึงได้มาเป็นดีเจ
ผมค้นหาแนวเพลงใหม่ๆและรู้สึกอินกับมันอยู่ตลอดเวลา เพราะฉะนั้นสำหรับผมเเล้วยิ่งมี connections ที่แปลกและเยอะเท่าไหร่ ดนตรีก็จะสนุกมากขึ้นเท่านั้น”

Sonori-kaะ: โลแกน คุณช่วยบอกเราเกี่ยวกับงานศิลปะอื่นๆอีกได้ไหม?

โลแกน เบย์: “ผมชอบเวลาที่ผมมีอะไรทำตลอดเวลา ตอนผมอยู่ที่อเมริกา ผมทำงานพร้อมๆกัน 3-4 งาน: ผมเปิด ร้าน indiezene publishing พร้อมกับทำงานเป็น ดีเจ, กราฟฟิค ดีไซน์เนอร์ และ pop artist
ที่นี่ผมทำงานร่วมกับ P7 เกี่ยวกับโชว์ที่ผมทำเมื่อปีที่แล้ว กับเงินสนับสนุนจากนิวยอร์กที่เราใช้ซื้อโรงงานแห่งนึง และเปลี่ยนมันให้เป็นแกลเลอรี่ ในปีนี้ เราทำงานกับศิลปินอีก 15 คน สำหรับนิทรรศการ FOR2 ที่จะจัดขึ้นที่ BACC โดยมี P7 เป็นผู้จัดงานและรวมงานทุกอย่าง

ส่วนตัวผมเองกับภรรยาของผมตัดสินใจที่จะทำนิตยสารแจกฟรีชื่อ สัปปะรด (PINEAPPLE) เราวางขายสัปปะรดฉบับแรกเมื่อเดือนกรกฏาคมที่ Happy Monday พร้อมๆกับ ที่ the Poetry Foundation ในชิคาโก้ เราตั้งใจที่เขียนข้อมูลต่างๆในคอลลั่มของสัปปะรดฉบับแรกให้เป็น minimal ที่สุด เพราะว่าเราต้องการให้มันสัมผัสได้ ให้น่าค้นหาและมีอารมณ์โรแมนติกนิดๆ ผมรู้สึกว่ายังมีหลายสิ่งหลายอย่างเกิดขึ้นในกรุงเทพที่ยังไม่ใช่ fine art แต่มันเป็นเหมือนตรงกลางระหว่าง fine art กับงานกราฟฟิค และก็ยังมีอีกหลายๆอย่างที่เกิดขึ้นแต่ไม่ได้ถูกนำเสนอ สัปปะรดจึงเกิดขึ้นเพื่อบ่งบอกผู้คนและทำให้พวกเค้านั้นสนใจเรื่องศิลปะมากขึ้น”
