Sonori-kaะ #1// The Lady of Club Soma

MIXT and Lo Spremiagrumi are very glad to launch Sonori-kaะ , a Bangkok-based music project officially starting today, 01.October.2011. In the next months Sonori-kaะ will cover the independent music scene gravitating around the Thai capital: bands, producers, labels, event organizers, clubs, djs, music shops and much more!! Armed of our camera and our passion for music we will tour the city to offer you every week new interviews, videos, and pictures … to culminate in the next months in the first Sonori-kaะ live event.

We would like to give a big thank you to all the people that in different ways are making this possible with their collaboration, experience, and availibility!! Thank you: Nana Dakin, Jasmine Dürr, Ricardo Rodriguez Elias, Robert Treborikki Pomegranates, and Sveva Pettorino.

Sonori-kaะ is a project by Tommaso Maggio, Laura Perin, Valeria Racemoli and Kaotoo Vacharapaprucks. A music platform, a sound-map, a network for all the music lovers.

ในอีกไม่กี่เดือนข้างหน้า Sonori-kaะ จะครอบคลุมวงการดนตรีอินดี้ในมหานคร รวมไปถึง วงดนตรี, โปรดิวเซอร์, ค่ายเพลง, event organizers, คลับต่างๆ, ดีเจ, ร้านเพลง และอื่นๆอีกมากมาย
เมื่อมีกล้องถ่ายรูปอยู่ข้างๆและความหลงไหลในดนตรี พวกเราจะเดินทางทั่วกรุงเทพเพื่อเสาะหา บทสัมภาษณ์, วีดีโอและภาพถ่ายต่างๆทุกอาทิตย์ สำหรับ live event ครั้งแรกของ Sonori-kaะ
ที่กำลังจะเกิดขึ้นในอีกไม่กี่เดือนข้างหน้านี้!

Sonori-kaะ #1

We are happy to start with a group of people that has really taken seriously their commitment to make indie rock and indie pop nights a reality in Bangkok. I am talking about the guys at Club Soma, a indie rock ‘n roll party that tours the alternative music hubs in the city and, most recently, the co-producer of The Drums live concert.

In particular we had the pleasure to meet their lady, Lady Soma, and to have an insight on the life and the passions of one of Club Soma’s original founder.

Lady Soma: “I’ve started listening to rock music as a kid. My older brother had a band in the ‘90s. At that time it was cool for Thai kids to be playing in a band. I remember many international bands coming to playing in Thailand. So growing up it was just natural for me to look for a more independent music scene than the mainstream Koran pop that is really on vogue now.

Club Professional was a series of competitions for emerging djs. Basically everyone could play for 15 minutes and if you won the competition you could come back the next night. I decided to participate with a friend and we did well. We also won some competition. So after a while we got the offer to organize an event.

Club Soma was funded in 2006. At the beginning we were two Thais and two British guys, but since they left in 2008 we have become an all-Thai group of four people, four djs with a job in the daytime and a passion for indie music 24/7. As for me, what I really love is producing art and music events. I still work as a freelance doing advertising and copy writing but in this way I have more time to dedicate to music. I usually come up with the concept for the event and then I propose it to the others and they help me with the production. Our way of working is really collaborative.”

Lady Soma: “I let music inspire me for the theme of each Club Soma night. People these days like very much to be inspired by other forms of art, like fashion, but I always put music first. I think that our attitude influences very much also the visual art that we create for the events. Everything that we do comes from the root of rock; this is our identity. And you can see it in the videos and the graphics. Dj Put is of great help with that; he is a graphic designer and our Dj/Vj. A friend of mine also helps with the video art that goes with our dj sets.

In the past we thought with the others at Club Soma about having our own club but the scene of people that listen to indie-rock music is not that big in Bangkok. You can try and do something but then sooner or later you’ll have to develop a more mainstream sound. Indie rock clubs might not last, but the people who love it are still ready to party! And this is what Club Soma is about!“

พวกเราตื่นเต้นกับการเริ่มต้นของ Sonori-kaะ และกลุ่มบุคคลในวงการดนตรีindepentdent ที่รวมตัวกันสร้าง indie rock และ indie pop nightในกรุงเทพมหานครใช่แล้ว เรากำลังพูดถึง Club Soma ซึ่งก็คือ indie rock’n rollปาร์ตี้ที่จัดขึ้นตาม จุดศูนย์กลางของเพลงอัลเทนาทีฟในกรุงเทพ และล่าสุดเป็นหนึ่งในผู้จัดคอนเสริ์ตของวง The Drums
ดังนั้นเราจึงได้นัดพบกับ Lady Somaและได้รับเกียรติพูดคุยกับเธอเกี่ยวกับชีวิตของเธอแบบเจาะลึกและแรงบันดาลใจของเธอในฐานะหนึ่งในผู้ก่อตั้ง Club Soma

Lady Soma: เราเริ่มฟังเพลง rock ตั้งแต่ยังเด็กตอนนั้นพี่ชายมีวงดนตรีในช่วงยุค ‘90s.ในสมัยนั้นมันเท่มากเลยนะสำหรับเด็กไทยที่จะเล่นอยู่ในวงดนตรียังจำได้อยู่เลยว่าช่วงนั้นมีวงดนตรีสากลจากต่างประเทศเข้ามาเล่น liveคอนเสริ์ตในประเทศไทยหลายวง มันเลยกลายเป็นนิสัยของเราไปเลย ที่จะมองหาเพลงindepentdent ใหม่ๆแทนที่จะเป็นเพลงตลาดแบบเกาหลีสมัยใหม่

Club professional คือการแข่งขันสำหรับดีเจหน้าใหม่ ทุกคนจะได้เวลา15 นาทีสำรหบัการแข่งหนึ่งรอบ ถ้าชนะก็จะได้กลับมาเล่นอีกในคืนต่อไปตอนนั้นตัดสินจร่วมเข้าแข่งขันกับเพื่อนและพวกเราก็ทำได้ดี มีชนะบ้างหลังจากนั้นไม่นานเราก็ได้รับข้อเสนอให้จัดงาน event

Club Soma ก่อตั้งขึ้นในปี พศ.2549ในตอนแรกมีสมาชิกเป็นคนไทยสองคนและคนอังกฤษอีกสองคน แต่2ปีถัดมาพวกเขาก็ออกไป ในปี 2551 Club Somaจึงกลายเป็นคลับของคนไทยล้วนๆสี่คนเป็นกลุ่มดีเจที่มีงานปกติระหว่างวันแต่มีใจรักเพลง indie ตลอด 24ชั่วโมงสำหรับตัวเราเอง สิ่งที่รักที่สุดคือการทำงานศิลปะและจัดงานดนตรีแต่เราก็ยังเป็น freelance ทำงานโฆษณาและ copy writingพอมาทำงานด้านนี้ ก็มีเวลาสำหรับงานดนตรีโดยปกติแล้วเราจะคิดและออกไอเดียสำหรับคอนเซ็ปของงานแต่ละงานจากนั้นก็เสนอให้คนอื่นๆฟัง แล้วเราก็ช่วยกันในขั้นตอนการจัดงานวิธีการทำงานของเราจะเป็นแบบนี้ ร่วมมือช่วยกันตลอด

เรายกให้ดนตรีเป็นแรงบันดาลใจสำหรับธีมของงานแต่ละงานที่จัดขึ้นโดย Club Somaคนส่วนใหญ่ในตอนนี้ชอบมากเวลาธีมของงานจัดขึ้นโดยมีอิทธิพลจากศิลปะ ด้านต่างๆอย่างเช่น แฟชั่น แต่เราจะคำนึงถึงเรื่องดนตรีเป็นอย่างแรกเราคิดว่าทัศนคติของพวกเราแสดงออกมาอย่างเด่นชัดในงานด้าน visual artที่เราทำขึ้นมาสำหรับในงานแต่ละงาน ทุกสิ่งที่เราทำมีรากฐานมาจาก rock cultureนี่คือ สิ่งที่เราเป็น มันคือเอกลักษณ์ของพวกเราDj Put เป็น graphic designer และ Dj/ Vj ของพวกเรา เค้าเป็นคนจัดการเรื่องนี้อย่างที่เห็นกันใน video และงาน graphic ต่างๆ เพื่อนของฉันอีกคนก็ช่วยในการทำvideo art ที่ใช้ประกอบเซตงานของ Dj แต่ละคน

เมื่อก่อนที่ Club Soma เราเคยคิดกันว่าจะมีคลับขึ้นมาจริงๆแต่ภาพโดยรวมของคนในกรุงเทพที่ฟังเพลงแนว indepent มันมีไม่มากถ้าจะทำมันก็ทำได้นะแต่ไม่ช้าก็เร็วเราก็ต้องเปลี่ยนแนวของเราให้มันเข้ากับเพลงที่ติดตลาดอยู่ดี ถึงแม้ว่า Indie rock คลับจะไม่ยืนยงแต่ก้ยังมีคนที่รักในสิ่งนี้และพร้อมที่จะสนุกด้วยกันตลอดและนี่แหละคือ Club Somaและสุดท้าย Lady Somaก็ได้ฝากเพลงสามเพลงไว้ให้เป็นของขวัญสำหรับการพูดคุยกันในครั้งนี้ขอบคุณมากคะ!
