During the last month the town of Getxo, 14km from Bilbao, has hosted its photography festival, Getxophoto promoted by Begihandi collective. For its fifth edition called Elogio de la Vejez (In Praise of Elderly) they have asked 20 international artist to express their point of view on the elderly. What I find particularly beautiful about this project, other than the theme that I absolutely love, is the effort in selecting the places around the city to be part of each edition: ”It is not about decorating the city but cutting it to tell stories through especially chosen images.” Photographs are not anymore simple work of art to be observed but they want to bring different perspectives to the citizens.

Here is a promotional video for the fifth edition, by Contrapunto

These are some of the work we like the most!!

Nelly Rodriguez // Mangiato Abbiam Mangiato! Bevuto Abbiam Bevuto

Inspired by an expression her grandmother used to tell her at the end of each meal, the work focuses on daily gestures that are turned into rituals and memories.

Kaylynn Deveney // The Day-to-Day Life of Albert Hastings

Albert and Kaylynn lived in the same neighbourhood she asked him to be the subject of her photograpic work. And he accepted.

Josep Echaburu // Centro de Vida

Centro de vida tells the story of life that is created in the geriatrics, the new friends and new romances.
